More often than not, I'll buy a bellydance DVD, watch it once, and then never look at it again. The instructor doesn't explain things in a coherent fashion, the production quality is low, or the content is uninteresting. I don't want to waste my time on something that I could have figured out on my own. So when I say that Bellydance Taqasim featuring Ranya Renée is the best DVD I've ever purchased, it must be awesome :)
Ranya Renée's teaching style is dynamic and at times very entertaining. It is clear that she knows what she's talking about! Taqasim has always been something that I didn't quite understand and this DVD does an excellent job of breaking down both the musical structure and the techniques used while dancing. One of my favorite parts of the DVD is a long segment where each type of instrument used for various taqasims are introduced by musicians who play them. The various drills and movement qualities that Ranya Renée pairs with each type of taqasim makes improvisation seem much less daunting. The production quality is excellent; it is easy to see and hear everything and the navigation is smooth and intuitive. The DVD case even has a list of taqasim key term definitions. I really can't say enough how awesome this DVD is!
